- In the United Kingdom, the Conservative government passes Section 28, a clause that bans the "promotion of homosexuality" by local government.

- April- Hungary - Lambda became the first LGBT organisation to be registered, this being the first also such official recognition in Central and Eastern Europe
- 24 May - Section 28 becomes law.
- October 11 - National Coming Out Day founded in the United States.
