[edit] Race summary

This was the first visit to Canada in two years. Pits and facilities had been upgraded, but as usual this season the McLaren team dominated. Ayrton Senna collected his fifth consecutive pole from Alain Prost some 4 seconds inside the current pole record. The Williams drivers were suffering, qualifying merely ninth and 11th. Derek Warwick raced despite a serious accident in his Arrows on the Saturday.

Prost led from the start, away from Senna and the two Ferraris, although after ten laps Gerhard Berger backed off with fuel problems. On lap 19 while coming up to traffic, Senna managed to pass his teammate to retake the lead. Alessandro Nannini retired with a split hose. On lap 23 Berger retired with engine problems. On the same lap, Nigel Mansell passed Nelson Piquet, although this would only last for six laps before his engine failed, some five laps before that of his teammate Riccardo Patrese.

On lap 34, Michele Alboreto also retired his Ferrari with a similar engine problem as his teammate. The minor teams outperformed themselves. Philippe Streiff put in an unbelievable drive in the AGS in fifth place ahead of Andrea de Cesaris in the Rial in sixth. Though not placing in a points-scoring, Stefano Modena's eighth place was a stunning achievement for the hapless EuroBrun team.

Senna won against Prost ahead of Thierry Boutsen. Piquet was fourth albeit lapped, with Ivan Capelli taking fifth after Streiff spun out. de Cesaris' fine drive was ruined by running out of fuel with two laps to go, dropping him to ninth and handing the final point to Jonathan Palmer's Tyrrell.
