The 1st Winter Asian Games were held from March 1 to 8, 1986 in Sapporo, Japan.[1]. With Sapporo's expertise and infrastructure available after successfully hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics, the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Seoul in 1984 decided to give Japan the privilege of hosting the first ever Winter Asian Games. [2] Participating in a total of 35 events in 5 sports were 430 athletes and officials from seven countries.[3]

A total of 35 events from five sports were held in the 1st Winter Asian Games. There were also two demonstration sports: Large-hill (90m) Ski Jumping and Short Track Speed Skating.

Names are arranged in alphabetical order by their IOC designations. Of the seven NOCs that participated in the 1st Winter Asian Games, six have so far never failed to send participants to all subsequent editions: China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea and Mongolia.
