The race was marked by a peculiar incident where the eventual winner Didier Pironi overtook Ferrari teammate Gilles Villeneuve despite an agreement the two drivers had to stay behind Villeneuve. The deal between the two was that whoever had the lead before the last corner, would not be overtaken by the other, no matter if the one following could drive faster. Pironi was 2nd behind Villeneuve, who was leading the grand prix, but did not stay behind Villeneuve after the last corner. Pironi did not follow up to this gentlemen's agreement, and stole the victory, that is how Villeneuve saw it. On the podium afterwards his face told the world how he was feeling. Villeneuve was quoted saying "I'll never speak to Pironi again in my life". The sad thing is that these words came true in a horrible way, As Gilles was killed during qualifying at the following race at the Zolder circuit in Belgium.
