- June 20-24 - International Whaling Commission meeting in Canberra. Pro-whale groups including Friends of the Earth, Project Jonah and Greenpeace demonstrate outside the Lakeside Hotel where the commission delegates gathered to decide catch quotas for the 1978 whaling season.
