- Dr. Frank Kameny becomes the first openly gay candidate for the United States Congress when he runs in the District of Columbia's first election for a non-voting delegate to Congress.

- March 24 - American federal judge dismisses laws barring homosexual immigration in granting citizenship to Cuba man.

- April 1 - French magazine Tout seized by police who characterize its call for sexual liberation in that country an "outrage to public morals."

- June 1 - UK newspaper International Times loses an appeal on inndecency charges for running personal ads for gay men.

- July 1 - Gay Alliance Toward Equality (GATE) is founded as Canada's first gay rights organization.
- July 21 - George Klippert is released from prison, two years after homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada.

- October 12 - New York City Department of Consumer Affairs recommends the repeal of a city law banning homosexuals from working in or going to bars.

- November 16 - U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy says he supports laws banning employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
