Longtime St. Louis gangster Frank "Buster" Workman dies of natural causes.
  • Sicilian Mafia Commission - The Cupola is reinstated. The Cupola disbanded 1963 after the "Ciaculli Massacre" bomb. The new Cupola is headed by Cinisi Clan Capo Gaetano "Don Tano" Badalamenti - chairman, Stefano Bontade - Santa Maria di Gesu Clan Capo and Luciano Leggio - substituto - Toto 'The Beast" Riina - Corleonesi Clan Capo.
  • Paul Sciacca Bonanno Crime Family Boss is in bad health and subsequently convicted and imprisoned. Former Joseph Bonanno Lt. and wedding usher Natale "Joe Diamonds" Evola takes control of the Family with Commission approval.
  • John "Sonny" Franseze, Colombo Crime Family Capo and father of Michael Franseze, is imprisoned until 1979. He had previously been involved in receiving kickback payments from the recording industry.
  • Sicilian mafioso, Tommaso Buscetta, arrested in New York on a pending double murder conviction in Italy but because of no request for extradition he is released.
  • New Jersey mobster Angelo "The Gyp" DeCarlo is convicted of extortion and imprisoned.
  • June 11 - Former Bonanno Family Capo Gaspar DiGregorio dies of natural causes.
  • September 3 - Italian journalist, Mauro De Mauro kidnapped. Possibly on the orders of mafia boss Salvatore 'Toto' Riina.
