- March 1, President Ayub Khan promulgates a constitution which sought to reinforce his authority in the absence of martial law.
- April, Elections for the National and provincial assembly were held on the basis of Basic Democracies.
- July, the National Assembly passes the Political Parties Act, legalizing the formation of political parties.
- Both Urdu and Bengali become National Languages of the country with Bengali being a regional language and serves the Provincial language for that entity therefore it is mostly spoken in the erstwhile region of East Pakistan and India's West Bengal province as well as the disputed teritory of Tripura to the ethnic Bengalis of referred to as the Chittagonian Plains of East Bengal region.
