- February 29, the Constituent Assembly approves a constitutional draft which came into effect on March 23. The constitution, based on the principle of "parity" between the two wings of the country.
- March 23, Iskander Mirza becomes the first President of Pakistan.
- September, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, who had refused to sign the 1956 constitution as a member of the Constituent Assembly, becomes Prime Minister to preserve and defend the same constitution.
