- Following his release from prison, Sam Giancana becomes a high ranking member of the Chicago Outfit as a personal advisor and primary enforcer for Tony Accardo.
- Moey Wolinsky, a lieutenant of Louis Buchalter, is murdered. It is suspected this may have been retribution for misleading Lepke claiming a deal had been arranged to reduce Buchalter's prison sentence during his 1939 trial.
- February 19 - Murder, Inc. members Harry Maione and Frank Abbandando are officially executed by the state of New York following their murder trial the previous year.
- May 12 - After being transferred from Clinton State Prison to Great Meadow Prison in Comstock, New York, New York mobster Charles Luciano meets with US military intelligence, presumably to negotiate his early parole in exchange for his assistance in possibly becoming a liaison between Sicilian mafiosi or arranging organized crime leaders in preventing sabotage on the US East Coast.
- December 5 - Vincenzo Capizzi, former leader of the Pittsburgh crime syndicate (who had reportedly succeeded by Sebastian John LaRocca in 1937), is arrested by FBI agents for conspiracy to violate the National Bankruptcy Act.
