- The Second Boer War begins in South Africa. Major John McBride forms an Irish brigade to aid the Boers.
- Michael Davitt withdraws from the British House of Commons in protest at the Boer War.
- The first issue of Arthur Griffith's, 'United Irishman,' is published.
- The Rathmines and Rathgar music society is founded.

- William Butler Yeats and Edward Martin form the Irish Literary Theatre. Its first performance is The Countess Cathleen.
- W. B. Yeats publishes The Wind Amongst the Reads.

- Tom Kiely establishes a world record in the hammer event. He becomes the first man to throw the hammer more than 160 feet.
