1897-98 South African cricket season

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1897-98 South African cricket season was the tenth season of first-class cricket in South Africa. Most of the first-class games were for the Currie Cup, which retained the same format as in 1896-97 - Western Province, the holders, qualified for the final as hosts; the other four teams competed in a round-robin tournament to decide who would play Western Province. Border competed in the Currie Cup for the first time, taking the place of Eastern Province. Western Province retained their title by beating Natal by 8 wickets in the final.

Before the Currie Cup, a Transvaal XI led by Abe Bailey played a 2-day match against Natal that is also recognised as having first-class status.

Transvaal were the hosts of the Currie Cup and automatically qualified for the final. Their challengers were determined by reference to the qualifying round-robin. The challengers were first determined by reference to number of wins. As Transvaal and Griqualand West both finished with two wins, the result of the head-to-head match was used to determine the winners.
