The Scottish League was introduced to Scottish Football in 1890-1891 with ten teams competing.

Champions: Dumbarton and Rangers were declared joint champions after drawing a play-off game 2-2 at Cathkin Park, Glasgow on May 21, 1891.
NOTE: Renton F.C. started the season as members of the SFL, but were expelled for professionalism (the game was still officially amateur at this stage). Also, Celtic F.C., Third Lanark F.C. and Cowlairs F.C. were all deducted four points for fielding ineligible players.

Queen's Park were winners of the Scottish Cup after a 2-1 win over Vale of Leven.

Vale of Clyde F.C. were winners of the Junior Cup witha 2-0 win over Chryston Athletic, in a replay after a drawn first game.
