- February 24 – In London, played another unofficial match England which defeat Scotland 1-0.
- March 16 – England: Inaugural FA Cup Final: Wanderers beat Royal Engineers 1–0 at the Kennington Oval (see also: 1871-72 in English football)
- September – Kick corner and ball fixture was introduced by FA.
- November 30 – The first international match is played: Scotland and England draw 0-0 at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow, with attendance 3,000.
