180th Airlift Squadron unit patch

[edit] Source

Lt Col John B. Logan, Commander of the 180th Bombardment Squadron (L), announced a competition in 1949 for a new unit patch insignia. The winning submission was designed by Miss Francine Townsend who won a $50 savings bond for her winning submission.

  • The line through the center represents the 180th since a semi-circle is 180 degrees.
  • The mule represents Missouri.
  • The saddlebags represent the city of Saint Joseph, the home of the Pony Express.
  • The goggles and earphones represent a flying unit.
  • The original insignia had bombs in the saddlebags symbolizing the bombardment mission of the 180th at that time

Over the years, the unit patch has been modified as the 180th mission changed. It is not copyrighted but the patch is the property of the 180th Airlift Squadron.
