• Governor of New South Wales- Captain William Bligh; from 1 January, Colonel William Paterson (acting)
• Lieutenant-Governor of Tasmania - David Collins

• April 25 - the first post office in Sydney established.
• May 8 - Lachlan Macquarie is officially appointed Governor of New South Wales, caretaker William Patterson governs until his appointment begins on Jaunary 1, 1810.
• May 24 - Lachlan Macquarie received his instructions as next governor of New South Wales, including instructions to reinstate Bligh temporarily on his arrival.
