[edit] Summary
Illustration of a woman riding sidesaddle while wearing a dress of lawn and a jockey cap, from Journal des Dames, 1799.
She's not wearing a riding habit, but rather a light white Directoire gown -- which would only really be convenient for riding in the summer over grassy turf (not dusty dirt roads)... She's also wearing a short "spencer" jacket, which is unbuttoned and open in front.
