- February 12 - John Macarthur is appointed by Grose as inspector of public works, and is granted 100 acres of land at Parramatta.
- February 18 - Sydney's first school opens in an unfinished church building.
- September 15 - Captain William Paterson leads a party of Scotsmen in the first attempt to cross the Blue Mountains. He is unsuccessful.
- September 25 - Sydney's first church opens.
