[edit] Followup

I contacted the school's network admin, who explained that this particular box is leased out to Madison-Oneida BOCES and, while they have had some problems with it in the past as far as malware, the school district is not liable for its use under the lease terms. The school is switching over to another network and this box and IP are probably going to be off their hands soon, anyway.

However, based on the one student's name that was used, he thinks he knows who was involved and they will be talked to, at least. I will let everyone know how it turns out since he will email me followup. Daniel Case 17:24, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Disciplinary actions taken

An email today from the school's tech supervisor informed me that he and the principal met with the student in question to discuss the inappropriateness of his actions in vandalizing Wikipedia with derogatory material concerning a fellow student. His user account was suspended for a week and other unspecified disciplinary actions were taken by the principal (I would imagine, in New York, this means detentions or in-school suspension).

The student was very remorseful and sent an apology letter, which I will post here when I have appropriately redacted it. Daniel Case 20:16, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Here's the sutdent's letter (I have omitted his name to preserve his confidenitality):

I am writing in regards to an incident that took place at Westmoreland High School last week on your web site; Wikipedia.com. I regret to inform you that I was responsible for the inappropriate statement about my fellow classmate. I now realize how much of an inconvenience it is for the editors at your site to constantly be on the look out for people doing childish things, like me. I would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused the company, and for anyone I may have offended because of my actions. Again, I am truly sorry.

Applogy accepted. Daniel Case 22:12, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
