You might want to have a look at Wikipedia:External links. In general, we would rather have content added to our articles than links to articles, even very good ones. Consider that what we are trying to accomplish here is an encyclopedia, not a collection of good links on a subject. If you start adding links to many articles, it will give the appearance of link-spamming: using wikipedia links to increase traffic to your site.

On the other hand (he said, having just stumbled across another user's addition of a Smithsonian link), if the Smithsonian piece is on a specialised topic that we have no article covering that relates to the article to which it is added, the external link becomes more defensible.

In short, done with the above concerns in mind, you could probably add a number of links that would be a real addition to the project. Just be aware that we get a lot of spamming, and some of us are inclined to get cranky about it. -- Mwanner | Talk 22:32, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your suggestion regarding Portrait! When you feel an article needs improvement, please feel free to make whatever changes you feel are needed. Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone can edit almost any article by simply following the Edit this page link at the top. You don't even need to log in! (Although there are some reasons why you might like to…) The Wikipedia community encourages you to be bold. Don't worry too much about making honest mistakes—they're likely to be found and corrected quickly. Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. At any rate please do not do more than three reverts in a 24h period.
