1. deild karla

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1. deild karla (E. Men's First Division) is a football (soccer) league in Iceland. It is the second division from the top in the Icelandic football division system. The top league is generally called Úrvalsdeildin (E. Premier League), but for commercial purposes it is also named after it's main sponsor, which now is Landsbankinn bank, so at the moment the league is called Landsbankadeildin.

Thus, the system is as follows:

There is also one more, called Utandeildin (roughly translated Outside League) but it as the name indicates not part of the official league system. Teams get promoted and relegated between the others, but that does not apply to Utandeildin.

In the 2006 season, the following teams will compete in 1. deild karla:

In 2005, the final order after the 18 rounds played, was:

  1. Breiðablik (Kópavogur) 44 pts
  2. Víkingur R. 37 pts
  3. KA 34 pts
  4. Fjölnir 22 pts
  5. Víkingur Ó. 22 pts
  6. Þór 21 pts
  7. HK 20 pts
  8. Haukar 17 pts
  9. Völsungur (Húsavík) 16 pts
  10. KS (Siglufjörður) 13 pts

Breiðablik and Víkingur R. were promoted and will compete in Úrvalsdeild this season, Völsungur and KS were relegated and will compete in 2. deild this season (actually this winter KS was merged with Leiftur, which is from nearby town Ólafsfjörður. Leiftur has for the last fews seasons been merged with Dalvík, from nearby town Dalvík, under the name Leiftur/Dalvík, but they went their separate ways last fall).
