"The building was completed in 1882 and was outfitted with an elaborate fortress guard house called 'Iolani Barracks."

I removed the part of this sentence regarding Iolani Barracks. The barracks were completed ten years before the current Iolani Palace and weren't even originally located on the Palace grounds (it originally stood where the Hawaii State Capitol does now). Instead, I added a "See also" link to the barracks article. I left the photo of the barracks, however.

I also removed some information about Aliiolani Hale from the article, as it is already mentioned on its own page.

I corrected some information in the article too. The decision to dedicate Aliiolani Hale as a government building instead of a palace, for example, was made by Kamehameha V himself, not Kalakaua.

[edit] Move to proper name?

I may not fully understand the complexities of the issue, but as far as I can see, this page could be moved to its proper (UTF-8) name, just like the others? I will do that, please revert me if I was overly naïve with respect to the drama incurred by an opening quote mark. Arbor 29 June 2005 09:14 (UTC)

OK, done it. I saw that the ‘Okina page itself is doing just fine, so I assume that the current one will work as well. Arbor 29 June 2005 09:19 (UTC)

Consider adding "|Iolani Palace" as a sortkey to the category entries. I presume it should be alphabetized as if it does not have a diacritical mark. It looks a bit odd now, being at the end of category listings. For example, see Category:U.S. National Historic Landmarks. --Eoghanacht 2005 June 29 16:45 (UTC)

Actually, it would be more proper to list it by the consonant ʻ, but this is seldom if ever done. Hawaiian dictionaries just alphabetize on the vowel. Nonetheless, it is not a good idea to use the article title ʻIolani, for the reason that few if any would look for that name (Iolani, being more usual) and the representation of the ʻ has been in flux here at Wikipedia (and can be represented many ways, most not necessarily correct) - Marshman 03:02, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
