Żurrieq

Żurrieq (or Iż-Żurrieq) is one of the oldest towns in Malta, and has a population of 9,816 (Nov 2005). Zurrieq is situated in the South of Malta. It became a parish in 1436 and the parish church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. A popular tourist destination in Żurrieq is the Blue Grotto, which is noted for the purity of its water. Another destination for tourists is the Xarolla Windmill. One can also visit the recently excavated catacombs situated next to the windmill bordering the village of Ħal Safi. The feast of its patron saint, Saint Catherine of Alexandriais the main feast in Zurrieq and one of the best in Malta. It is known for its beautiful fireworks, church, and for the beautiful statue as well. The St. Catherine's feast is held on the first Sunday of September. The secondry feast in Zurrieq is that of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel..Despite being a secondary feast, it is a more spectacular event than the main feast.
Zurrieq is in the South-eastern part of Malta. It makes part of the Fifth political District and votes for the local council every three years. The council is made up of seven members, one of them is the Major of the town. The present Major of Zurrieq is Ignatius Farrugia.
