Talk:Ōban Star-Racers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From the preview of the first 2 episodes aired at the London MCM Expo today, it seems the muscial score is untouched, however they mention that the opening and ending credits wernt finshed for the English version. IanC 19:26, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DVD?
Will Oban Star racers be available on DVD? - R.G. 05:28, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- A 1-13 episode DVD set will be released in France around January. American DVDs haven't been anounced yet, but probably will. - The Norse 00:07, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Question
Does anybody know why none of the characters have noses? -- Jason Palpatine 05:19, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
The original demo, which is completely cel-shaded, doesn't have noses. It would probably have come out wrong on the cel-shader, so they decided not to have them. -- Madd the sane 06:26, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Lego people don't have noses either and no-one minds that :) -- samrad 14:18, 6 July 2006 (BST)
- What are Lego people? Do you mean Eggo? -- Jason Palpatine 21:40, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- lego.... as in the toys... for kids.... *blank stare*... you have to know what Lego's are, come on man..... -Xornok 21:55, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Note
I'm not an administrator but I will say that there were a lot of spoiled links on the page. Whoever wrote the page did a good job but most of the things which were meant as links don't exist here. Also on the question above, they probably don't have noses to set the animation apart from other shows. -- 24.56.235.95. July 4th 2006, at 2:27 AM (on my watch).
- I assumed that the links were meant to be there - and point to nothing - in case anyone wanted to create the linked page. --JeffreyAtW 18:37, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "More Control Than That of the Creator"
"The search for financing was a long process since Yeatman-Eiffel refused to negotiate with a party that would have more control than that of the creator".
However, Jetix U.S. still changed the opening theme song (they restored the ending theme, later). How does one explain that? That's defintely more control than the creator, even if just this part.
- I just got this bit of info from the French article. It's just the theme song. It was changed from the original theme song made for the French show. Keep in mind that the actual show itself has not been changed, and furthermore, I believe this phrase was referring to the actual production of the show, not its distribution. The final project closely matched Yeatman-Eiffel's initial vision. --JeffreyAtW 05:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Same difference, but I'll let it be...for now.
-
- Does this mean that the English language version hasn't been censored like a lot of shows are when they are dubbed by American companies?
-
- perfectblue 16:59, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- This is a kid's show, so I doubt this show had much, if anything to edit. Plus French TV show standards aren't very different from US ones, unlike Japanese standards. The Norse 13:28, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- You might actually be surprised what is shown on European TV that can't be/doesn't get shown in the US. On paper, things might look similar but US companies like 4Kids tend to censor anything that 'could possibly be interpreted as....', as well as the actual risque material itself.
-
-
-
- Primarily though, I'm talking about cultural censorship rather than sex and violence. A lot of what is censored during dubbing is not potty talk and boobs, it's cultural and social things. For example
-
- Cousins marrying in Cardcaptor Sakura
- Sanji smoking in One Piece
- People drinking/getting drunk in Tenchi Muyo
- WWII being mentioned 'from the other side' in Space Battleship Yamato
Do you remember the 'donought' from Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon? That was censorship, but it wasn't because something was obscene. Besides, other French kids shows, like Code Lyoko, have been censored before.

[edit] Ending Song
Okay, the song "Waratteta", by: Sukoshi...what does "Waratteta" mean anyway? Some please tell me! It's driving me nuts!
- "Laughter," or "smile."
- Most literally, the meaning is "was laughing", with the subject omitted as per the Japanese tendency. This makes it somewhat ambiguous as to whether this should be "I was Laughing", "You were Laughing", etc. The second line, "Waratteta zutto hou ga yasashii yo", is one I'd translate to "it was nicer than ever when (you) laughed", for what that's worth. Odd little tune, thank you, Kanno-san. -EchoNull 20:38, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Article doesn't sound encyclopedic...
This sounds like an advertisement, or a salesman trying to sell this article/show. Somebody please make this formal sounding, like an encyclopedia, not a catalog or a magazine review. Abby724 05:14, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Not really, it sounds fine to me. The Norse 22:27, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Trivia
Every anime, show, movie, comic etc with a wiki article has trivia, so it shouldn't be removed.
"The trivia is at turns POV, original research, unsource, or just plain inane (no noses?) source what you put back in, and don't make a trivia header, please" you say. Let's take a look-see at the trivia:
- None of the characters in this show have a nose. -- How is this inane? It's true and should be noted as it's a very rare style of art. Have you even seen this show? If not, get out please.
- Noseless characters are very common in animation. Please show a source noting this, to show that this isn't one of those "A fan noticed that the shirts are orange!" kind of trivial things. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Eh..Source? Anyone who isn't full-on blind who has watched the show. not a single character has a node of any specified kind. And it's not really a very common type of animation, the only other anime-related things with no noses I can think of is the Atlus game Sky Gunner and Final Fantasy Tactics's character artwork. -- The Norse 00:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- I want a source where someone other than a Wikipedia editor makes note of this as rare. I don't think it's an important detail. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 07:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- In 1997, the project's original title was Ōban Racers, although it was changed in 2001 for the trailer to Molly, Star-Racer. It has since become a mix of both names. -- This is true, no source is really needed.
- Um. You may want to read WP:V. This does need a source. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Sav! The World released a trailer in 2001 set to a Y&Co. remix of Ayumi Hamasaki songs, which gained wide popularity on the Internet. The trailer already showed a mix of 3D and 2D though at the time 3D was still predominant. It was officially removed sometime afterward since the rights to the songs could not be acquired. -- No reason to be removed.
- Needs a source. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Google search "Molly, Star Racer". There is no way to source something's popularity. Can't find a source for the song rights thing. -- The Norse 00:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- Wanting to avoid stereotypical voices, Savin Yeatman-Eiffel chose mostly fresh newcomers for the original French cast (it was Gabrielle Jeru's first voice recording experience), and personally directed them. He then travelled to Canada to supervise the English dub. -- Also true and has no reason to be removed. Yeatmen-Eiffel is in the credits of the English dub as a supervisor.
- Blatantly POV, completely unsourced. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, he chose mostly new French voice actors and directed them himself because he felt like it and for no other reason than that because it would be someone's point of view. Source? The series' ending credits. -- The Norse 00:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- Let's not speculate as to his reasoning; let's simply report on the cast. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 07:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- Determined to remain true to his original vision of the project, Savin Yeatman-Eiffel created his own company, "Sav! The World Productions" in his one bedroom apartment. -- True, but may not belong here. Sav! The World has no formal Wiki article.
- Blatantly POV for the first half, needs a source for the second. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- See the NewType link below, the creator turned down offers from production companies to prevent tampering with his formula. The one-bedroom apartment thing I'm not sure about. -- The Norse 00:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- The search for financing was a long process since Yeatman-Eiffel refused to negotiate with a party that would have more control than that of the creator (including, but not limited to the option of changing the main character into a boy). In the end it took him a total of nine long years to complete the series (the concept was created in 1997, with actual production having begun in Tokyo in 2003). -- Fact. Source: NewType USA October issue: http://www.newtype-usa.com/xml-rss2-all.php
- Certainly this fact can go somewhere than a catchall "trivia" section. Also, the source needs to go into the article. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Savin Yeatman-Eiffel, the show's creator is the great-grandson of Gustave Eiffel, the original designer of Paris' famous Eiffel Tower. This is why the tower appears in the logo for Sav! The World Productions. -- Known fact.

- Can you do a bit better? IMDB is user-sumbitted, and doesn't review entries. It's okay for basic stuff but this seems like it's something that would have been mentioned in an interview or something. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 07:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- Prince Aikka's name may be a play on the Japanese word "aika", meaning a sad song, elegy, or dirge. -- Lesser things have been noted in many other articles. No reason for removal.
- It's incredibly trivial and completely speculative. Source plz. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Heh, that's why it's trivia. Source: See a Japanese dictionary or something. It does seem to fit the character well so it's probably not a coincidence.
- We don't want a trivia section. If it's too trivial to fit into this article don't mention it. And since it's speculative please don't mention it. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 07:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- Most of the episode titles in the series use an "adjective Like name" structure (Grave Like Groor, Treacherous Like Toros, etc). Episodes 1, 2, 12, 13, 14 and 19 have been the exceptions to this rule. -- No reason for removal.
- Inane observation. Please show that this fact bears mention at all by citing a third-party reliable source (I'll even let the third-party part slide) that mentions this. And, no, I don't mean a list of the episode names, but someone other than a WP editor noticing this. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 23:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know what's more reliable than an episode list for this kind of thing. It is kind of an inane observation and I would have added something about said titles telling who the main opponent is for that episode. -- The Norse 00:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- Not in a trivia section (Wikipedia:Avoid trivia sections in articles). - I just sent a message to the user who originally added the unsourced trivia asking him for the sources which I failed to find. I think that "Avoid trivia sections" thing is very overlooked, because almost every article of this type has a list of trivia(Or trivia under a different name like "Similarities" and "Observations"). -- The Norse 00:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, we take mediocre writing, but we want brilliant, you know? Trivia sections are useful in incomplete articles, but they shouldn't be something you want to have in the final product. (Not that any article is ever done.) - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 07:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Increasing incidence of spoilers as show nears end
I've noticed that a couple of times now very significant spoilers have appeared on this page and the episodes page. Last week, somone posted synopses of four upcoming issues. Today, I've discovered what appear to be significant spoilers in the character descriptions, particularly the background on Kanelito. I'd like to ask whomever is maintaining the article to keep a closer watch on major spoilers and be prepared to edit them back out until they have appeared in the story. - User: Doc W 05:53, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
