[edit] Phonetic value

The sound represented in Chuvash by ӑ is a back, low, rounded vowel and does not have equivalents in English or Western European languages. It is always reduced, and can occur stressed only in the first syllable of a polysyllabic word. It varies in its phonetic realization from a reduced /i/ or [ə] (the schwa-like sound of a in English sofa) to a labialized version of the a in English all (with rounded lips). lt is like Russian /o/ or /a/ after the accent (as in direktor or traktor). It is fleetingly pronounced, and sometimes so reduced as to sound almost coalesced with the following consonant as in /sĕtel/ 'table', almost > /stel/.
