From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Étienne-Gaspard Robert (1764-1837), better known by his stage name Étienne Robertson, was a Belgian stage magician and early exploiter of the phantasmagoria.

A professor of physics in his native Liege, he states in his memoirs that he read the works of Porta and Kircher et al, and began on the road to horror by devising what would become the most prolific entertainment of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1784, Robertson gave an exhibition of an improved magic lantern, the phantasmagoria.
