[edit] History

Opened in 1972, the school was named in honour of the French Canadian politician, poet, and historian François-Xavier Garneau of the 19th century. [1]

[edit] Building

Garneau is sometimes known as "The Bomb Shelter", "The Lego Block","GarnBarn" or "Clown School" because of its angular and box like shape, as well as its diversified color scheme. Its roof leaks regardless of how hard or soft the rain is outside. The school environment is less than favorable. Therefore the name "GarnBarn" has a double meaning, referring to both the shape of the school as well as the living conditions.

It is located in a highly francophone area. To the east of Garneau, is the MIFO (Mouvement d'implication francophone d'Orléans), an organisation that encourages francophone culture within the community of Orléans.

In 2001, construction of a new addition onto Garneau was due in part to expanding demographics, government budget cuts and the closure of a nearby francophone intermediate school called Léo-D-Côté for grades 7 to 8.

[edit] Programs offered

[edit] CCNA Cisco courses and computers

Garneau offers a variety of specialized courses including programming and economics in addition to traditional coursework. Garneau and Cisco Systems have paired together to offer the students of grade 10, 11 and 12 a college-level Cisco CCNA networking course.

[edit] GuG

Known as Groupe Utilisateur Garneau in French (Garneau User Group), this group of students playtests and evaluates products given by computer and software companies. A magazine with all the products tested is made every 6 months, and sent to their sponsors.

The GuG the only high school student administered member of the Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG). This internationally recognized association consists of more than 400 user groups throughout the world.

''Anti - French campaign - campaign''

There is also an anti-french campaign-campaign which has emergerd with a englih flag pin. This orginasation is not against french itself but simply agaisnt the french campaign. It is important to realise that the p.i.n.s. is not an attack against the language but simply for the neutralism of bi-linguinism.This group is growing and demontrates that M. Denis Pigeons', a teacher at the school, french bracelet is wrong. This group believes in not putting a language over another, as the french bracelet has done, and be proud of being bi-lingual. This very exellent group in my openion was started by someone who goes to garneau and sees someone with the wrethched green and white bracelet everyday. I only hope that those who have bought the pin and showed their support in my group will support that of which is being written on this website at this moment and that those in the binding contract of the french green and white bracelet will not be offended but simply see.
