Çamlıhemşin (originally known as ^{[citation needed]};Vija) is central town and administrative district of Rize Province, Turkey. It is an important access point to Kaçkar mountains. Its name literally translates as Piney Hamshen. This is a combination of the terms "Çamlı" which in Turkish means "pine-forested" or "piney" and "Hemşin", the Turkish translation for the Armenian name "Hamshen" (a term usually used to refer to the present-day Hemşin district of Rize). The addition of the term "Çamlı" is most likely a reference to the type of trees that can be found in the region. There are 8,237 residents in Çamlıhemşin, the majority of whom are Muslim Hamshenis, an ethnic group of Armenian origin who speak a Turkish dialect Hemşince which was adopted under Turkic rule.^{[citation needed]}
